Taiwan, an island nation located in East Asia, is also known for its cultural diversity. There are lots of different groups of people living around Taiwan, one of a group of people called Tao lived in Orchid Island (Lanyu in mandarin) located on the southwestern coast of Taiwan. A group of indigenous people lived in this Island for thousands of years, the Tao tribe, also known as the Dàwùzú in Mandarin. The Tao people have a cultural heritage deeply connected with the sea. Traditionally, they have relied on fishing and maritime activities for sustenance and cultural identity. One of the most significant parts of their culture is their Traditional boat, also known as Tao canoes. Tao canoes are most likely to be used for fishing and transportation, and Tao canoes are mostly made from locally sourced materials such as wood, bamboo, and rattan. Crafted with detail and profound respect for their own tradition, these canoes represent not just for transportation; they have a deep connection to nature and a reverence for the ocean that runs deep within the indigenous Tao culture of Orchid Island. There are also lots of designs created on the Tao canoes, the designs often depict marine creatures, ancestral spirits, and symbols of protection. The Tao canoe is significant through the cultural and spiritual life of the Tao people. The Tao canoes are used in traditional ceremonies, such as the flying fish festival. During the flying fish festival, the Tao people gathers to honor and celebrate of the festival, for them flying fish are not just food, is also a connection with the mother ocean that gave them food to eat. Although in now a day the influence of modernity affect technology and so on, the canoe remain its importance in their culture, they are not just transportation tools but also a historical preserving to the Tao’s culture. Through different initiatives such as educational program, cultural exchange and the cultural inheritance, Tao’s tribe history can ensure their unique way of life and the deep connection with the mother ocean that connect with their future connection. In summary the Tao canoe represents a harmonious blend of art, history and cultural heritage, people in now days or in the future probably will forget but in other ways the Tao’s are protecting their history also ensure their history, culture and story will pass down from generation to generation.
